CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Taylor
âI just turned the knob!â I exclaim when Douglas comes running back, white-faced.
âThatâs the door to the ââ
He doesnât get a chance to finish his sentence when a second alarm begins to sound and a loud explosion follows it.
âWhat was that?â I grip my mother tightly, worried for her.
Douglas meets my gaze, his own tense. âIntruders. Dr. Laxmor will be on her way back. You have to go back. We canât do this today.â
âNo!â I block his path. âThis is the only chance we have. I have to save my family.â
âIf Dr. Laxmor finds out, sheâll be very angry!â Douglas bursts out. âAnd sheâll blame me!â
âYou donât know that!â I tell him, quickly. âYou said that all the researchers who were supposed to be here are upstairs. Theyâre the ones who will get in trouble, right?â
Douglas looks fearful, glancing down the hallway.
"Douglas, please." It's hard to keep my voice steady, knowing this is my only chance. I don't know who is attacking the facility. It can't be Jesse because Director Brown said he was just on his way. This is somebody else, and I can no longer risk my family's lives.
When he hesitates, I harden my heart. âIf you wonât help me, Iâll do it myself. But I thought we were friends, and friends stand up for each other in times of need.â
The label of 'friends' means a lot to Douglas. I know that much, and it is evident from the way his body stiffens that he's found himself stuck.
Another explosion and then faint screams.
"This isn't the time, Douglas! Let's go!" I grab the doorknob and before Douglas can stop me, I pull it open. A louder alarm blares now and Douglas pulls me away, hissing, "That's the wrong room! It leads into the lower part of the basement, where that man is kept. Why did you have to break the door?"
That's when I realize that the knob of the door is in my hand.
I wasn't able to control my strength. That is something that hasn't happened to me in a very long time. Ever since I started training with Raeina, I've always been extremely cautious with my strength. I've had to be because I can cause a lot of damage within seconds.
"It was an accident!"
Douglas looks frustrated, but he just begins hurrying down the corridor, "We have to move fast!"
He tries his access card on a door only to be rejected. He tries it again and then takes a step back, tense. "It's not working. The security must have been reset when the alarms went off."
"What're you talking about?" I demand, anxiously.
"Dr. Laxmor has a security system in place that revokes everybody's access in certain situations. It's automated and only Dr. Laxmor can return everybody's access. That means we can't get you back into the lab and the back up security cameras have been activated."
He's trembling like a leaf and as I absorb his words, I wonder if this is just turning out to be an ideal situation. Dr.
